Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has called on the Welsh Government to ensure that no more NHS dental practices will close in his region.
Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Rowlands, who recently highlighted that six more practices in North Wales would not be offering NHS services from this March said he was very concerned at the situation.
He said:
Access to an NHS dentist is one of the most pressing issues that people in Wales face, and particularly in my region of North Wales.
Just recently, we've heard it announced that six dental practices in North Wales are due to close from March this year, leaving thousands of my constituents in North Wales without access to their routine NHS dental care. It's not an isolated problem, but it's certainly an acute one for my constituents in North Wales.
Dentists themselves are clear that the current system is unsustainable. Contractual arrangements, recruitment and retention challenges, and rising costs are driving practices away from that NHS provision.
All of this is completely within your control and your gift to do something about it, as it is, of course, a completely devolved issue at the behest of the Welsh Labour Government here.
So, with the new contract coming into place in April this year, will you be able to guarantee that no more dental practices in my region of North Wales will close?
The First Minister, Eluned Morgan said they recognised there were pockets where they needed to run in and to reinstate the provision.
Mr Rowlands added:
The majority of dentists who are terminating their contracts blame the Welsh Government’s Dental Reform Consultation for their decision and it is an extremely worrying trend.
I do not believe that the Welsh Government are doing enough to improve NHS dental services here in North Wales and they need to do a lot more to encourage dentists to sign new contracts in April.
It is about time that the Welsh Government accepted that there really is a worsening crisis in NHS dentistry across my region.

Mae Sam Rowlands, AS Gogledd Cymru, wedi galw ar Lywodraeth Cymru i sicrhau na fydd rhagor o ddeintyddfeydd y GIG yn cau yn ei ranbarth.
Wrth siarad yn y Senedd, dywedodd Mr Rowlands, a bwysleisiodd yn ddiweddar na fyddai chwe deintyddfa arall yn y Gogledd yn cynnig gwasanaethau'r GIG o fis Mawrth ymlaen, ei fod yn bryderus iawn am y sefyllfa.
Meddai:
Mynediad at ddeintydd GIG yw un o'r materion mwyaf dybryd y mae pobl yng Nghymru yn eu hwynebu, ac yn enwedig yn fy rhanbarth i, Gogledd Cymru.
Dim ond yn ddiweddar, rydym ni wedi clywed cyhoeddiad y disgwylir i chwe phractis deintyddol yn y gogledd gau o fis Mawrth eleni, gan adael miloedd o'm hetholwyr yn y gogledd heb fynediad at eu gofal deintyddol GIG arferol. Ac, fel yr ydych chi wedi ei gydnabod, nid yw'n broblem ynysig, ond mae'n sicr yn un ddifrifol i'm hetholwyr yn y gogledd.
Mae deintyddion eu hunain yn eglur bod y system bresennol yn anghynaliadwy. Mae trefniadau cytundebol, heriau recriwtio a chadw, a chostau cynyddol yn gyrru practisau oddi wrth y ddarpariaeth GIG honno.
Mae hyn i gyd, wrth gwrs, o fewn eich rheolaeth a'ch gallu yn llwyr i wneud rhywbeth amdano, gan ei fod yn fater cwbl ddatganoledig ar orchymyn Llywodraeth Lafur Cymru yma.
Felly, gyda'r contract newydd yn cael ei weithredu ym mis Ebrill eleni, a fyddwch chi'n gallu sicrhau na fydd mwy o bractisau deintyddol yn fy rhanbarth i yng Ngogledd Cymru yn cau?
Dywedodd y Prif Weinidog, Eluned Morgan, eu bod yn cydnabod bod mannau lle’r oedd angen iddyn nhw gamu i’r adwy ac adfer y ddarpariaeth.
Ychwanegodd Mr Rowlands:
Mae’r rhan fwyaf o ddeintyddion sy’n terfynu eu contractau yn beio Ymgynghoriad Llywodraeth Cymru ar Ddiwygio Deintyddol am eu penderfyniad, ac mae’n duedd sy’n peri pryder mawr.
Nid wyf yn credu bod Llywodraeth Cymru yn gwneud digon i wella gwasanaethau deintyddol y GIG yma yn y Gogledd ac mae angen iddyn nhw wneud llawer mwy i annog deintyddion i lofnodi contractau newydd ym mis Ebrill.
Mae’n hen bryd i Lywodraeth Cymru dderbyn y ffaith bod yr argyfwng yn neintyddiaeth y GIG yn gwaethygu ar draws fy rhanbarth.
