Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, wants more to be done to speed up assessments and diagnosis for children suffering from ADHD and Autism.

Speaking in the Senedd, Mr Rowlands said questioned whether the current system for assessing and supporting children with this issue was working.

He said:

I would like to request a statement from the Welsh Government on an issue that is affecting far too many people, and that is how we’re assessing and supporting children with ADHD and autism, and whether the current system is really working for the families who should be relying on it.

Far too often, I hear from parents who are deeply worried about their children, and, far too often, those concerns are met with long waiting times, of up to seven years in North Wales, unclear processes, or children being told to just cope without any proper diagnosis or support in place.

We all know that early intervention can make a world of difference not just academically, but for a child's confidence, well-being and future, but we can’t intervene properly if those early assessments are not taking place. In the meantime, pupils are being misunderstood, teachers are under pressure and parents are left feeling helpless.

I would like to have an update to the Senedd, on what is being done to speed up those assessments, how the ALN system is working in practice for children who haven’t yet had a formal diagnosis, and how we’re making sure that schools have the training and resources they need to support those pupils day-to-day.

Sam Rowlands AS yn mynegi pryder am yr amser mae'n gymryd i asesu plant sy'n dioddef o ADHD ac Awtistiaeth

Mae Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, eisiau i fwy gael ei wneud i gyflymu asesiadau a diagnosis ar gyfer plant sy'n dioddef o ADHD ac Awtistiaeth.

Wrth siarad yn y Senedd, cwestiynodd Mr Rowlands a yw'r system bresennol ar gyfer asesu a chefnogi plant sy’n dioddef o’r cyflyrau hyn yn gweithio.

Meddai:

Fe hoffwn i ofyn am ddatganiad gan Lywodraeth Cymru ar fater a godwyd eisoes gyda'r Prif Weinidog yma heddiw, felly mae hynny'n dangos ei fod yn berthnasol ac yn effeithio ar lawer gormod o bobl, a hynny yw sut y byddwn ni'n asesu ac yn cefnogi plant ag ADHD ac awtistiaeth, ac a yw'r system bresennol yn gweithio mewn gwirionedd i'r teuluoedd a ddylai fod yn gallu dibynnu arni. yw'r asesiadau cynnar hynny'n digwydd.

Yn rhy aml, fe glywn ni oddi wrth rieni sy'n bryderus iawn am eu plant ac yn rhy aml mae'r pryderon hynny'n cael eu hwynebu gydag amseroedd aros hir o hyd at saith mlynedd yn y gogledd, prosesau sy'n aneglur, neu fod rhywrai yn dweud wrth blant am ymdopi heb unrhyw ddiagnosis neu gefnogaeth briodol ar waith.

Nawr, fe wyddom ni i gyd y gall ymyrraeth gynnar wneud byd o wahaniaeth nid yn unig yn academaidd, ond o ran hyder, lles a dyfodol y plentyn, ond ni allwn ni ymyrryd yn briodol os nad yw'r asesiadau cynnar hynny'n digwydd. Yn y cyfamser, mae disgyblion yn cael eu camddeall, mae athrawon dan bwysau a'r rhieni yn teimlo yn ddigymorth.

Felly, fe hoffwn i ddatganiad gan y Llywodraeth, yn ddiweddariad i'r Senedd, ar yr hyn sy'n cael ei wneud i gyflymu'r asesiadau hynny, sut mae'r system ADY yn gweithio yn ymarferol ar gyfer plant nad ydyn nhw wedi cael diagnosis ffurfiol eto, a sut y byddwn ni'n sicrhau bod yr hyfforddiant a'r adnoddau angenrheidiol yn yr ysgolion i gefnogi'r disgyblion hynny o ddydd i ddydd.
