Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is backing a call for children and young people to stay safe around water.
Mr Rowlands. Shadow Minister for Health is supporting a Water Safety Event being held in Plas Madoc Leisure Centre, Wrexham, on Thursday July 25 for 10 – 16 year olds from Wrexham Rural South area, at 11am -1pm.
He said:
Everybody knows how passionate I am about children and young people enjoying the great outdoors and I was delighted to hear about this session offering them free guidance and advice about the dangers they could face.
Earlier this year I had the pleasure of meeting with representatives from AdventureSmart UK and the Water Safety Wales group who are working to increase awareness of water safety as sadly drownings in Wales are on the increase.
I am pleased to see a multi-agency approach to try and get the message across to our children and young people as I believe it is it is vital they have the opportunity to learn more about staying safe around water.
I fully support Water Safety Wales who are now calling for people of all ages in Wales to be encouraged to learn key safety tips to help children and young people stay safe around the sea, rivers and other open water.
The free event is being organised by North Wales Police with partners, including the Fire and Rescue Service and the Canal & River Trust.
During the session the various agencies will deliver talks around water safety, followed by a quiz whereby two x free family swimming passes will be up for grabs!
The Fire Service will also be deploying their Water Rescue Unit, and their powerboat to showcase the equipment they carry, along with some of their rescue techniques.
Water Safety Wales say too many people in Wales are drowning. Despite their efforts, people are more likely to drown now than they were when Wales’ first ever Drowning Prevention Strategy was published three and a half years ago.
Four people under 20 died in accidental drownings in Wales in 2022 – the highest number since comparable data became available from the National Water Safety Forum’s Water Incident Database (WAID) in 2015.

Sam Rowlands AS yn cefnogi digwyddiad ar ddiogelwch dŵr
Mae Sam Rowlands, Aelod o Senedd Cymru dros Ogledd Cymru, yn cefnogi galwad i blant a phobl ifanc gadw'n ddiogel o amgylch dŵr.
Mae Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog Iechyd yr Wrthblaid yn cefnogi Digwyddiad Diogelwch Dŵr sy'n cael ei gynnal yng Nghanolfan Hamdden Plas Madoc, Wrecsam, ddydd Iau 25 Gorffennaf ar gyfer pobl ifanc 10 – 16 oed o ardal De Wledig Wrecsam, rhwng 11 y bore ac 1 y prynhawn.
Meddai:
Mae pawb yn gwybod pa mor angerddol rwy’n teimlo am sicrhau bod plant a phobl ifanc yn mwynhau'r awyr agored ac roeddwn i wrth fy modd yn clywed am y sesiwn hon sy'n cynnig cyngor ac arweiniad am ddim iddyn nhw am y peryglon posib y gallan nhw eu hwynebu.
Yn gynharach eleni cefais y pleser o gyfarfod â chynrychiolwyr AdventureSmart UK a grŵp Diogelwch Dŵr Cymru sy'n gweithio i godi ymwybyddiaeth o ddiogelwch dŵr gan fod achosion o foddi ar gynnydd yng Nghymru, yn anffodus.
Rwy'n falch o weld dull amlasiantaethol o geisio rhannu'r neges i'n plant a'n pobl ifanc, gan ei bod yn hanfodol eu bod nhw'n cael cyfle i ddysgu mwy am gadw'n ddiogel o amgylch y dŵr.
Rwy'n cefnogi ymgyrch Diogelwch Dŵr Cymru yn llwyr, sydd bellach yn galw ar bobl o bob oed yng Nghymru i ddysgu cynghorion diogelwch allweddol er mwyn plant a phobl ifanc i gadw'n ddiogel yn y môr, afonydd a dŵr agored arall.
Mae'r digwyddiad am ddim hwn yn cael ei drefnu gan Heddlu'r Gogledd a phartneriaid yn cynnwys y Gwasanaeth Tân ac Achub a Glandŵr Cymru.
Yn ystod y sesiwn, bydd yr asiantaethau amrywiol yn cyflwyno sgyrsiau am ddiogelwch dŵr ac yn cynnal cwis lle bydd cyfle i ennill dau docyn nofio am ddim i deuluoedd!
Hefyd, bydd y Gwasanaeth Tân yn defnyddio eu Huned Achub Dŵr, a'u cwch pŵer i arddangos yr offer maen nhw'n ei gario yn ogystal â dangos rhai o'u technegau achub.
Dywed Diogelwch Dŵr Cymru bod gormod o bobl yng Nghymru yn boddi. Er gwaethaf eu hymdrechion, mae pobl yn fwy tebygol o foddi nawr nag oedden nhw pan gyhoeddwyd Strategaeth Atal Boddi gyntaf erioed Cymru dair blynedd a hanner yn ôl.
Bu farw pedwar o bobl dan 20 oed mewn achos o foddi damweiniol yng Nghymru yn 2022 - y nifer uchaf ers cyhoeddi data cymharol o Gronfa Ddata Digwyddiadau Dŵr y Fforwm Diogelwch Dŵr Cenedlaethol (WAID) yn 2015.
