Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has praised campaigners in Saltney for getting the community involved in their protest.

Mr Rowlands was commenting after parents and children held a final drive asking people to fill in the consultation papers about the proposed closure of St Anthony’s Catholic School in Saltney at the local Morrisons store on Sunday.

Flintshire County Council is currently carrying out a consultation on the plans to close four catholic schools and create a super-school in Flint for pupils aged 3-18 from 2026 to 2029.  They include St Anthony's Catholic Primary in Saltney, St David's in Mold, St Richard Gwyn Catholic High School and St Mary's in Flint.

Following an assessment of all existing sites, the proposed new school will be developed on the existing sites of St Richard Gwyn and St Mary’s in Flint. The plan also includes closing St Anthony’s by September 2026.

Mr Rowlands, who totally opposes the move, has urged people to make their feelings known before the deadline this Friday, July 18.

He said:

I was delighted to hear how parents were rallying around handing out consultation papers to shoppers and having a final push for support.

Well done to Kerry Hunt and members of the Parent Action Group and their children who managed to gain quite a few more completed forms.

I have continually said that I am really amazed that this controversial proposal has actually gone to a consultation given the huge tide of concern from parents and children.

I have met with action groups from Saltney, Mold, and Flint areas which have been set up to fight against the plans and it is great to see the communities backing local schools.

The closing date for the consultation is at the end of this week and I would urge everyone to make sure they lodge their objections.

Sam Rowlands AS yn cefnogi protestiadau yn erbyn cynlluniau i uno pedair ysgol Gatholig yng Ngogledd-ddwyrain Cymru

Mae Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros y Gogledd, wedi canmol ymgyrchwyr yn Saltney am annog y gymuned i gymryd rhan yn eu protest.

Roedd Mr Rowlands yn gwneud ei sylwadau ar ôl i rieni a phlant gynnal un hwb olaf mewn siop Morrisons leol ddydd Sul, gan ofyn i bobl lenwi'r holiaduron ymgynghori am y bwriad i gau Ysgol Gynradd Gatholig Sant Anthony yn Saltney.

Ar hyn o bryd mae Cyngor Sir y Fflint yn cynnal ymgynghoriad ar y cynlluniau i gau pedair ysgol Gatholig a chreu uwchysgol yn y Fflint ar gyfer disgyblion 3-18 oed rhwng 2026 a 2029.  Maen nhw’n cynnwys Ysgol Gynradd Gatholig Sant Anthony yn Saltney, St David’s yn yr Wyddgrug, Ysgol Uwchradd Gatholig Sant Richard Gwyn a'r Santes Fair yn y Fflint.

Yn dilyn asesiad o'r holl safleoedd presennol, bydd yr ysgol newydd arfaethedig yn cael ei datblygu ar safleoedd presennol Sant Richard Gwyn a’r Santes Fair yn y Fflint. Mae'r cynllun hefyd yn cynnwys cau Sant Anthony erbyn mis Medi 2026.

Mae Mr Rowlands, sy'n gwrthwynebu'r bwriad yn llwyr, wedi annog pobl i wneud eu teimladau yn hysbys cyn y dyddiad cau sef dydd Gwener yma, 18 Gorffennaf.

Meddai:

Roeddwn i'n falch iawn o glywed sut roedd rhieni yn brysur yn dosbarthu papurau ymgynghori i siopwyr er mwyn denu rhagor o gefnogaeth.

Da iawn i Kerry Hunt ac aelodau'r Grŵp Gweithredu Rhieni a'u plant a lwyddodd i gael llawer mwy o ffurflenni wedi'u cwblhau.

Rwyf wedi dweud droeon fy mod yn synnu bod y cynnig dadleuol hwn yn destun ymgynghoriad o ystyried y don enfawr o bryder gan rieni a phlant.

Rwyf wedi cwrdd â grwpiau gweithredu o ardaloedd Saltney, yr Wyddgrug a'r Fflint sydd wedi'u sefydlu i frwydro yn erbyn y cynlluniau ac mae'n wych gweld y cymunedau'n cefnogi ysgolion lleol.

Y dyddiad cau ar gyfer yr ymgynghoriad yw diwedd yr wythnos hon a byddwn yn annog pawb i wneud yn siŵr eu bod yn cyflwyno eu gwrthwynebiad.
