Sam Rowlands

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is calling on constituents to make sure livestock are protected.

Mr Rowlands, a dog owner, is backing a call by the Farmers ‘ Union of Wales who are reminding dog owners to act responsibly when out enjoying the countryside.

He said:

I am happy to add my voice to remind dog owners, who are walking their pets in the countryside this Easter,  to make sure their animals are kept on a lead especially when near livestock.

As the daylight hours increase and the weather warms up many people will be keen to visit some of the scenic landscapes we have to offer in North Wales. However, we really need to be aware of our surroundings when walking our pets and follow the Countryside Code.

It is extremely worrying to hear that North Wales Police received more than 80 reports of livestock attacks in 2024 alone and we all need to realise what can happen when sheep are attacked and suffer because a dog has been let loose by its owner.

The extent of the problem was further documented in a recent freedom of information request by the FUW to North Wales Police, which received over 80 reports of livestock attacks in 2024 alone.

As the Easter holidays get underway, the Farmers’ Union of Wales (FUW) is again reminding dog owners to act responsibly when out enjoying the countryside.

In particular, the FUW is urging dog owners to use a lead when out and about with their dog in the countryside. Between 1 March and 31 July, a dog must be on lead on open access land, even if there is no livestock on the land.

The FUW is also reminding visitors to follow the Countryside Code, and in particular to pay close attention to and obey any signs indicating livestock presence or restrictions on dog access. Visitors are also reminded to stick to the right of ways and clearly defined paths, and to leave gates and property as you find them.

Commenting on the impact livestock worrying on farmers, FUW Regional Vice-President, Anwen Hughes said:

These attacks are not mere numbers; they inflict devastating trauma on livestock and further economic strain and stress on farmers. Beyond fatalities and severe injuries, the stress alone can trigger miscarriages in ewes, or lambs to become separated from their mothers.

This Easter, as we prepare to welcome visitors to enjoy our beautiful countryside, it’s crucial dog owners demonstrate diligence and responsibility when outside. Dog owners should never underestimate their dog, even the most friendly and well-trained dogs, have a natural instinct to chase and its vital that owners act responsibly when outside in the countryside.

Sam Rowlands AS yn annog perchnogion cŵn i gadw eu hanifeiliaid anwes ar dennyn yng nghefn gwlad

Mae Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, yn galw ar etholwyr i wneud yn siŵr bod da byw yn cael eu diogelu.

Mae Mr Rowlands, sy’n berchennog ci, yn cefnogi galwad gan Undeb Amaethwyr Cymru (FUW) sy'n atgoffa perchnogion cŵn i weithredu'n gyfrifol pan fyddan nhw allan yn mwynhau cefn gwlad.

Meddai:

Rwy'n hapus i ychwanegu fy llais, gan atgoffa perchnogion cŵn sy'n cerdded eu hanifeiliaid anwes yng nghefn gwlad y Pasg hwn i wneud yn siŵr bod eu hanifeiliaid yn cael eu cadw ar dennyn yn enwedig pan fyddan nhw’n agos at dda byw.

Wrth i’r dydd ymestyn a'r tywydd gynhesu, bydd llawer o bobl yn awyddus i ymweld â rhai o'r tirweddau hyfryd sydd gennym yma yn y Gogledd. Fodd bynnag, mae angen i ni fod yn ymwybodol o'n hamgylchfyd wrth i ni fynd â’n hanifeiliaid anwes am dro a dilyn y Cod Cefn Gwlad.

Mae'n hynod bryderus clywed bod Heddlu Gogledd Cymru wedi derbyn mwy na 80 o adroddiadau o ymosodiadau ar dda byw yn 2024 yn unig ac mae angen i ni i gyd sylweddoli beth all ddigwydd pan fydd ci yn ymosod ar ddefaid yn sgil cael ei ryddhau gan ei berchennog.

Cafodd hyd a lled y broblem ei dogfennu ymhellach mewn cais rhyddid gwybodaeth diweddar gan UAC i Heddlu Gogledd Cymru, a dderbyniodd dros 80 o adroddiadau o ymosodiadau ar dda byw yn 2024 yn unig.

Wrth i wyliau'r Pasg ddechrau, mae’r FUW unwaith eto yn atgoffa perchnogion cŵn i ymddwyn yn gyfrifol pan fyddan nhw allan yn mwynhau cefn gwlad.

Yn benodol, maen nhw’n annog perchnogion cŵn i ddefnyddio tennyn pan fyddan nhw allan gyda'u ci yng nghefn gwlad. Rhwng 1 Mawrth a 31 Gorffennaf, rhaid i gi fod ar dennyn ar dir mynediad agored, hyd yn oed os nad oes da byw ar y tir.

Mae'r FUW hefyd yn atgoffa ymwelwyr i ddilyn y Cod Cefn Gwlad, ac yn benodol i roi sylw manwl iddo ac ufuddhau i unrhyw arwyddion sy'n dangos presenoldeb da byw neu gyfyngiadau ar fynediad cŵn. Mae ymwelwyr hefyd yn cael eu hatgoffa i gadw at y dde ar ffyrdd a llwybrau wedi'u diffinio'n glir, ac i adael gatiau ac eiddo fel yr oedden nhw cynt.

Wrth sôn am yr effaith y mae poeni am dda byw yn ei chael ar ffermwyr, dywedodd Is-lywydd Rhanbarthol FUW, Anwen Hughes:

Nid dim ond mater o niferoedd yw'r ymosodiadau hyn; maen nhw’n achosi trawma dinistriol ar dda byw a straen economaidd pellach ar ffermwyr. Y tu hwnt i farwolaethau ac anafiadau difrifol, gall y straen yn unig sbarduno camesgoriadau mewn defaid ac i ŵyn gael eu gwahanu oddi wrth eu mamau.

Y Pasg hwn, wrth i ni baratoi i groesawu ymwelwyr i fwynhau ein cefn gwlad godidog, mae'n hanfodol bod perchnogion cŵn yn dangos diwydrwydd a chyfrifoldeb pan fyddan nhw yn yr awyr agored. Ni ddylai perchnogion cŵn fyth feddwl fod eu cŵn yn gwbl ddiniwed, hyd yn oed os ydyn nhw’r creaduriaid anwylaf ac wedi’u hyfforddi’n dda - mae ganddyn nhw reddf naturiol i ymlid ac mae'n hanfodol bod perchnogion yn gweithredu'n gyfrifol pan fyddan nhw yng nghefn gwlad.
