Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is pleased that Flintshire councillors have saved toilet facilities in Talacre, Mold and Holywell from closure.

Mr Rowlands, Chair of the Senedd’s Cross-Party Group on Tourism, previously expressed his concerns when it was first announced that the toilets were under threat.

This week Flintshire’s Cabinet granted a reprieve following a public consultation and new funding being made available.

He said:

I was extremely concerned when I heard that Flintshire County Council planned to close public toilets at these three popular sites across the county and really pleased to see a change of heart.

There was a huge outcry when the news was announced to shut down the sites at the Bus Station in Mold, just off the High Street in Holywell and Station Road in Talacre.

All three places are popular destinations not just for local people but they all attract tourists and it is important that public toilets are available.

I firmly believe that decent public toilets, particularly in popular and tourist areas, should really be a facility which is provided. We can’t expect people to come and visit our towns if we do not have a basic amenity.

This week Flintshire councillors agreed not to close the public toilets,  look at a new strategy and use funding from the UK Government’s ‘Pride in Place’ for the work. Once restored they will be looking for alternative organisations to take them over.

Mr Rowlands added:

While I obviously welcome the reprieve I do remain a little concerned that once the facilities have been refurbished the council will look at town and community councils to take on the responsibility.

These councils have limited budgets which have already been set for this financial year and transfer of these facilities may not be a viable proposition for them.

Sam Rowlands AS yn croesawu’r cam i achub tri thoiled cyhoeddus yn Sir y Fflint

Mae Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o’r Senedd dros Ogledd Cymru, yn falch bod cynghorwyr Sir y Fflint wedi achub cyfleusterau toiledau yn Nhalacre, yr Wyddgrug a Threffynnon rhag cau.

Mynegodd Mr Rowlands, Cadeirydd Grŵp Trawsbleidiol y Senedd ar Dwristiaeth, ei bryderon pan gyhoeddwyd gyntaf bod y toiledau dan fygythiad.

Yr wythnos hon daeth llygedyn o obaith gan Gabinet Sir y Fflint ar ôl cynnal ymgynghoriad cyhoeddus, a phan glywyd bod cyllid newydd ar gael.

Meddai:

Roeddwn i'n bryderus iawn pan glywais fod Cyngor Sir y Fflint yn bwriadu cau toiledau cyhoeddus yn y tri safle poblogaidd hyn ar draws y sir ac rwy’n falch iawn o weld eu bod wedi newid eu meddwl.

Cafwyd tipyn o stwr pan gyhoeddwyd y newyddion bod y toiledau yn yr Orsaf Fysiau yn yr Wyddgrug, oddi ar y Stryd Fawr yn Nhreffynnon a Heol yr Orsaf yn Nhalacre yn cau.

Mae'r tri lle yn gyrchfannau poblogaidd nid yn unig i bobl leol ond maen nhw i gyd yn denu twristiaid ac mae'n bwysig bod toiledau cyhoeddus ar gael.

Rwy'n credu'n gryf y dylai toiledau cyhoeddus gweddus, yn enwedig mewn ardaloedd poblogaidd a thwristaidd, fod yn gyfleuster sy'n cael ei ddarparu. Allwn ni ddim disgwyl i bobl ymweld â'n trefi heb fod gennym ni amwynderau sylfaenol.

Yr wythnos hon cytunodd cynghorwyr Sir y Fflint i beidio â chau'r toiledau cyhoeddus, edrych ar strategaeth newydd a defnyddio cyllid gan ‘Balchder Bro’ Llywodraeth y DU ar gyfer y gwaith. Ar ôl eu hadfer byddant yn chwilio am sefydliadau amgen i gymryd yr awenau.

Ychwanegodd Mr Rowlands:

Er fy mod yn amlwg yn croesawu'r newyddion, rwy'n parhau i fod ychydig yn bryderus bod y cyngor am weld cynghorau tref a chymuned yn ysgwyddo’r cyfrifoldeb.

Mae gan y cynghorau hyn gyllidebau cyfyngedig sydd eisoes wedi'u gosod ar gyfer y flwyddyn ariannol hon ac efallai na fydd trosglwyddo'r cyfleusterau hyn yn gynnig hyfyw iddyn nhw.
