Sam Rowlands

Sam Rowlands, Senedd Member for North Wales, has written to the Leader of Flintshire County Council demanding urgent action to tackle soaring rates of pupil absenteeism in local schools.

New figures reveal a troubling picture across Wales, with unauthorised absences in secondary schools now nearly double what they were just five years ago.

Sam Rowlands is particularly concerned about the figures in Flintshire where the local data shows the number of pupils missing school between 2018/19 and 2023/24 has risen from 25,858 to 64,476, an increase of 149%.

Mr Rowlands has raised the alarm about a lack of effective local measures to get children back into the classroom and called for the Council Leader Cllr Dave Hughes to set out how he intends to reverse the decline.

Commenting, Sam Rowlands Senedd Member for North Wales said:

These figures are a disgrace — and drastic action needs to be taken. Despite countless warnings, far too many pupils are missing out on large parts of their education and nothing is being done about it.

It’s clear that Flintshire Council must do more to support families and schools in getting children back into classrooms. Every day missed is a missed opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

I’m asking the Council Leader to explain what’s being done — and what more can be done — to turn this around. Our young people deserve better.

Cyfraddau absenoldeb o’r ysgol syfrdanol yn peri pryder yn y Gogledd

Mae Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros y Gogledd, wedi ysgrifennu at Arweinydd Cyngor Sir y Fflint yn galw am weithredu ar unwaith i fynd i'r afael â chyfraddau cynyddol o absenoldeb mewn ysgolion lleol.

Mae ffigurau newydd yn datgelu darlun pryderus ledled Cymru, gydag absenoldebau heb eu hawdurdodi mewn ysgolion uwchradd bellach bron i ddwbl yr hyn oedden nhw bum mlynedd yn ôl.

Mae Sam Rowlands yn arbennig o bryderus am y ffigurau yn Sir y Fflint lle mae'r data lleol yn dangos bod nifer y disgyblion sy'n colli'r ysgol rhwng 2018/19 a 2023/24 wedi codi o 25,858 i 64,476, cynnydd o 149%.

Mae Mr Rowlands wedi mynegi ei bryder ynghylch diffyg mesurau lleol effeithiol i gael plant yn ôl i'r ystafell ddosbarth ac wedi galw ar Arweinydd y Cyngor, y Cynghorydd Dave Hughes, i nodi sut mae'n bwriadu atal y dirywiad.

Meddai Sam Rowlands, yr Aelod o'r Senedd dros y Gogledd:

Mae'r ffigurau hyn yn gywilyddus - ac mae angen cymryd camau pendant. Er gwaethaf rhybuddion di-ri, mae llawer gormod o ddisgyblion yn colli allan ar rannau helaeth o'u haddysg a does dim yn cael ei wneud am y sefyllfa.

Mae'n amlwg bod yn rhaid i Gyngor Sir y Fflint wneud mwy i gefnogi teuluoedd ac ysgolion i gael plant yn ôl i’r ystafelloedd dosbarth. Mae pob diwrnod a gollir yn colli cyfle i ddysgu, tyfu a ffynnu.

Rwy'n gofyn i Arweinydd y Cyngor esbonio beth sy'n cael ei wneud - a beth mwy y gellir ei wneud - i roi diwedd ar hyn. Mae ein pobl ifanc yn haeddu gwell.
