Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, is urging Welsh Government to work with the UK Government to help people impacted by the potential closure of the 2 Sisters chicken factory in Llangefni.
Mr Rowlands, Shadow Minister for Local Government was commenting in the Senedd, regarding the announcement that the 2 Sisters Food Group were proposing to cease operations at their Anglesey factory, with the loss of 730 jobs, following a review of the company’s UK poultry division.
He said:
I would like to echo the comments made regarding the devastating impact of the proposed closure of the 2 Sisters Llangefni site, and the real importance for both the UK and Welsh Governments to work together to achieve as positive an outcome as possible.
It has been positive to see that there are companies on the island and beyond looking to offer further employment to those people who are affected.
I am pleased also that Virginia Crosbie, MP for Ynys Môn, has been working with employers to see what opportunities can be provided to those impacted as well. The taskforce that Welsh Government have set up, it's certainly good to see that happen as quickly as possible.
Mr Rowlands asked for assurances that the taskforce will ensure those impacted are supported through the 45-day consultation period, what work they are doing to look at the long-term viability of the site.
Trefnydd, Lesley Griffiths agreed that it was a devastating announcement and said the taskforce, which included Welsh Government, Ynys Môn council, UK Government, the Department for Work and Pensions, the company itself and Unite trade union would be looking at what can be done to support the affected employees and the communities.
Mr Rowlands added:
The potential closure of the 2 Sisters chicken factory is a major blow, not just to those whose jobs are at risk, but also to the wider community on Anglesey and I expect all layers of government to work together during this time to bring about the best possible outcome for those affected.

Gwnaeth Mr Rowlands, Gweinidog Llywodraeth Leol yr Wrthblaid, y sylwadau yn y Senedd ynglŷn â'r cyhoeddiad bod 2 Sisters Food Group yn bwriadu rhoi'r gorau i gynhyrchu yn eu ffatri yn Ynys Môn, gan arwain at golli 730 o swyddi, yn dilyn adolygiad o adran ddofednod y cwmni yn y DU.
Meddai:
Hoffwn ategu'r sylwadau a wnaed ynghylch effaith ddinistriol y bwriad i gau safle 2 Sisters Llangefni, a pha mor bwysig yw hi i Lywodraethau'r DU a Chymru weithio gyda'i gilydd i sicrhau canlyniad mor gadarnhaol â phosib.
Mae wedi bod yn braf gweld bod yna gwmnïau ar yr ynys a thu hwnt yn gobeithio cynnig gwaith i'r bobl sy'n cael eu heffeithio.
Rwy'n falch hefyd bod Virginia Crosbie, AS Ynys Môn, wedi bod yn gweithio gyda chyflogwyr i weld pa gyfleoedd y gellir eu darparu i'r rhai sydd wedi'u heffeithio hefyd. Mae'r Llywodraeth Cymru wedi sefydlu tasglu, ac mae'n braf gweld hynny'n digwydd mor gyflym.
Gofynnodd Mr Rowlands am sicrwydd y bydd y tasglu'n sicrhau bod y rhai sydd wedi eu heffeithio yn cael cefnogaeth drwy'r cyfnod ymgynghori o 45 diwrnod, a pha waith maen nhw'n ei wneud i edrych ar hyfywedd hirdymor y safle.
Cytunodd y Trefnydd, Lesley Griffiths ei fod yn gyhoeddiad dinistriol gan ddweud y byddai'r tasglu, oedd yn cynnwys Llywodraeth Cymru, Cyngor Sir Ynys Môn, Llywodraeth y DU, yr Adran Gwaith a Phensiynau, y cwmni ei hun ac undeb llafur Unite yn edrych ar yr hyn y gellir ei wneud i gefnogi'r gweithwyr a'r cymunedau yr effeithiwyd arnyn nhw.
Ychwanegodd Mr Rowlands:
Mae cau ffatri ieir 2 Sisters yn ergyd enfawr, nid yn unig i'r rhai y mae eu swyddi mewn perygl, ond hefyd i'r gymuned ehangach ar Ynys Môn ac rwy'n disgwyl i bob haen o lywodraeth gydweithio yn ystod y cyfnod hwn er mwyn sicrhau'r canlyniad gorau posib i'r rhai sydd wedi'u heffeithio.
